Communities in regional, rural and first nations communities continue to face inequalities in access to care and clinical trials close to home despite technological and medical advances.
Australasian Teletrial Model enables the conduct of clinical trials at smaller centres by linking them with larger trial centres. In this model, some or all aspects of a trial could be offered in partnership with primary and satellite site workforce. Details of the partnership and delegations are articulated in supervision plans. Operationally, care could be fully delegated, fully done via telehealth or done through hybrid. To enable the uptake of the model, state and territories have set up Australian Teletrial Program and NSW/ACT RRR programs. They provide cluster start up support and recruitment boosting and capacity building measures. These programs also pave the foundation for developing workforce enabling regulatory approval processes. This model is applicable to all fields of medicine. While the uptake is increasing, further speed and scale require a culture of health equity to ingrain the model into the whole system for sustainability and productivity.
